Johnny Thunders didn’t just play rock ‘n’ roll—he was rock ‘n’ roll. But on April 23, 1991, in a rundown hotel in New Orleans, his story took a dark and final turn. Thunders was found curled in a fetal position, his body stiff with rigor mortis, his belongings gone. The official story? An overdose. Case closed.

His family claimed he was dying of leukemia.
