Murder at Ashton Manor
Murder at Ashton Manor
Hello, I’m Jay Nicoll of Nicoll Investigations and this is an Ontario Cold Cases - Canada’s True Crime Podcast fictional episode of Whodunnit Wednesday’s.
Go back to the Golden Era of detective fiction and enjoy stories in the tradition of the greats of writing. From Agatha Christie to Raymond Chandler to John Creasey, these are short stories I hope you enjoy.
Prologue
It was a wild Halloween night when Lord Peter Wimsey found himself stranded at Ashton Manor, a sprawling estate that crouched atop a windswept hill, its turrets looming against a sky that flashed with lightning. He hadn’t intended to visit the aging mansion, but the storm had left him no choice. The bridge over the river had collapsed, making it impossible to proceed.
The manor was an imposing, Gothic affair, with winding corridors and rooms that seemed to swallow sound. Inside, the air was damp with the scent of old books and cold stone, and the shadows flickered unsettlingly as the wind moaned outside.
It was close to midnight when the first scream shattered the uneasy calm.
The night wore on, the storm continuing its ferocious assault on the manor, and Lord Peter moved through the house, piecing together the fragments of conversations, the hints of tension, the barely concealed secrets.
